Some sources claim that it is the third sporting event with the greatest economic impact, after the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

02.

It is one of the oldest trophies in international sport and the most difficult to win, as in 170 years only four countries have managed to lift the Hundred Guineas Jack: the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.

03.

The first competition was held in 1851, on the occasion of the Great Universal Exhibition in London. A regatta with a succulent prize, a silver trophy designed in 1848 by the official jeweler of the Royal House.

04.

An anecdote of this first regatta tells how Queen Victoria I asked who was first and was told “America, Majesty”. And then she asked who was second and was told “Your Majesty, there is no second”.

05.

During the Second World War, the Cup came to a standstill and was not resumed until 1958, when 12-meter boats, smaller than the previous ones, were adopted. From then on, the challenges became more frequent, as a result of the lower cost of the boats.

06.

New Zealand has won several times in the last decades, being one of the most outstanding teams nowadays, but the country with the most victories is the United States, with a total of 30.

07.

A special feature is that the winner not only gets the trophy, but also the right to choose a place and date for the next edition, where he/she will defend the title and establish the rules together with the first team that challenged him/her.

08.

Other curiosities that appear in the Deed of Gift document, which sets out the rules of the competition, are that the boats must be built in the country of their club, that one day must pass between races, and that a race cannot last more than seven hours.
